Before I share my thoughts on how artists can improve their sales, let me explain my perspective on art, artists, and selling art.<\/p>\n<p id=\"57f7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">To me, there\u2019s no real difference between what a business does and what an artist does. In essence, every business operates with the same basic structure: they create something and aim to sell it. This applies to every business, whether it\u2019s a tech company or an artist.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1c85\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">So why do some businesses and artists succeed while others don\u2019t? Don\u2019t tell me it\u2019s just luck. Yes, luck plays a role, but to let luck drive your success, you must first do everything else right.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9608\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Now that we\u2019ve established that selling art is just another form of business, let\u2019s explore what it takes to build a successful one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a42f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Throughout my career, I\u2019ve encountered this challenge time and again. For years, I analyzed ongoing projects to identify risks, and this experience taught me valuable lessons. Then, I spent years selling various products, using the same framework to guide me. In the past two decades, I\u2019ve built my own business and implemented numerous ideas, with that same framework helping me along the way.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2afc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">I call it the 4 W\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8a40\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The 4 W\u2019s are essentially four simple questions, or more accurately, a group of related questions. Each of these categories can have multiple questions within them. The goal of these questions is to help you:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li id=\"f593\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh anp anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Understand the business<\/li>\n<li id=\"7678\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh anp anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Create new business<\/li>\n<li id=\"2988\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh anp anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Analyze any business<\/li>\n<li id=\"e8bc\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh anp anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Train your brain to think in terms of questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"660e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Artists and businesses that struggle are often unable to answer these questions. So, if you want to be successful, you need to learn how to answer them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6aa5\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Before I dive into the details of this framework, I want to clarify that it\u2019s not the type of framework you\u2019d typically learn in university or one that guarantees success. It\u2019s not complete, and it certainly doesn\u2019t have all the answers. But it\u2019s a tool I use, and I\u2019d like to share it with you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c06a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The 4 simple questions are:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"\">\n<li id=\"a50a\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh aoy anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What? \u2014 what is the products?<\/li>\n<li id=\"3b2f\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh aoy anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Why? \u2014 why should somebody buy your product and not that from competition?<\/li>\n<li id=\"197d\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh aoy anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Who? \u2014 Who is your customer?<\/li>\n<li id=\"cfd4\" class=\"afn afo acs afp b afq ans afs aft afu ant afw afx pv anu afz aga py anv agc agd qb anw agf agg agh aoy anq anr bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When? \u2014 When will the customer buy?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"0385\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If you can\u2019t answer these questions correctly, it\u2019s better not to run the business \u2014 you won\u2019t be able to succeed. Let\u2019s break down each one:<\/p>\n<p id=\"3b3e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"afp gw\">What is the product?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"2c82\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">You might say, \u201cMy artwork.\u201d But is it really just your artwork, or is the customer buying something else? The question is about the problem your product solves. And yes, art also solves problems, such as the problem of the empty wall. What makes your product unique? What are the competing products on the market, and what is your unique value proposition?<\/p>\n<p id=\"c7f6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"afp gw\">Why should someone buy it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"80c7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If your only answer is \u201cbecause it\u2019s beautiful,\u201d it won\u2019t sell. Beauty is subjective, and it\u2019s not enough to persuade someone to buy. Ask yourself: Why does this product exist? Why should a customer choose it over the work of other artists? How will you communicate the benefits of your product, and through which channels?<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d10\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"afp gw\">Who is your customer?<\/strong><br \/>\nWho are the people who should buy your product, and where are they? Who are your competitors, and why are they successful? Do you need any partners to help you sell your work?<\/p>\n<p id=\"a5ab\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"afp gw\">When do customers typically buy this product?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"7ae4\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afn afo acs afp b afq afr afs aft afu afv afw afx pv afy afz aga py agb agc agd qb age agf agg agh gv bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Every business has its own timing. The timing isn\u2019t determined by when you finish production; it\u2019s shaped by the market and the customers.
